AlphaTauri: Pierre Gasly back in top 10 and Yuki Tsunoda in the points

During Free Practice at the French Grand Prix, Pierre Gasly appeared to come back to life, with his evolved AlphaTauri showing progress. The French are still concerned about some issues, but they want to be reassured about the new parts brought in.
« We were clearly back in the top 10, with a fifth place this morning and a seventh place this afternoon, » said Gasly. “With the new parts we brought in this weekend, the feeling in the way the car handled showed a lot of positive signs.”
« It’s fantastic to have this package for my home race and to see everyone on the track. Now we must work to understand what we tested today and sort through all of the data so that we can put them together for qualifying tomorrow.
« The front end is more responsive and snappy, especially in those long corners where we used to slide and overheat the tyres. The tires are still overheating, so we’ll have to work on that before racing, but it should be fun.
Tsunoda used both configurations.
Meanwhile, Yuki Tsunoda tested the evolved car this afternoon after driving the previous specification this morning. Despite finishing far down the standings in two sessions, the Japanese had to adapt to the car later in the day.
“We had a good comparison with Pierre this morning, so we have enough data for tomorrow,” Tsunoda assures. « There was a noticeable difference with the new package this afternoon, right from the first lap of attack, so I’m pleased. »
« It will be difficult, but based on our performance today, we can be optimistic. We still have some things to work out, but hopefully we’ll be able to polish them in SS3.
« We want to qualify for the third round. I didn’t feel any crazy degradation, which is a good sign, but the race will be hotter, so we’ll see.
Chief Race Engineer Jonathan Eddolls confirms that the upgrades were successful: « Because the evolutions worked as expected in EL1, we switched Yuki to this configuration for EL2. »
