Oscar Piastri announced on Tuesday that he will not be driving for Alpine next season, just hours after the Formula One team promoted the Australian reserve driver to replace Fernando Alonso.
Alonso surprised the team on Monday by informing Alpine that he will join Aston Martin next year. Alpine needed only one day to announce that its 21-year-old rising star would race alongside Esteban Ocon in 2023.
But the Melbourne native says that’s not going to happen.

Without my permission, Alpine F1 issued a press release late this afternoon announcing that I will be driving for them next year. This is incorrect, and I have not signed a 2023 contract with Alpine. Next year, I will not be driving for Alpine.

“Without my permission, Alpine F1 issued a press release late this afternoon announcing that I will be driving for them next year. This is incorrect, and I have not signed a 2023 contract with Alpine. Next year, I will not be driving for Alpine “He tweeted about it.
Piastri’s comments were not included in Alpine’s news release. There have been rumors that the current F2 champion was negotiating a better deal with another team.
Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer stated in the announcement that Piastri is “a bright and rare talent” who is “more than capable of taking the step up to Formula 1.”
Aston Martin signed Alonso, a two-time world champion, on Monday to replace Sebastian Vettel, who announced his retirement last week. This season marked the end of Alonso’s contract with Alpine.
It’s been a hectic six days of F1’s “silly season,” which began with Vettel announcing his retirement at the end of the year.
Alpine said Alonso had not given the team any indication of his intention to leave as late as Sunday night after the race, and the Piastri promotion was announced quickly.
Meanwhile, American driver Logan Sargeant will make his F1 debut at the United States Grand Prix later this year, according to Williams. Sargeant, a Florida-based F2 driver, will be the first American to compete in an F1 weekend since Alexander Rossi in 2015.
Alpine stated that Piastri has already undergone “This season, he will undergo “an intensive and comprehensive training program” to “prepare him for the next big step” into F1.
As our reserve driver, he was introduced to the team at the track, factory, and testing, where he demonstrated the maturity, promise, and speed that earned him a promotion to our second seat alongside Esteban “According to Szafnauer. “We believe that the duo will provide us with the continuity we need to achieve our long-term goal of competing for wins and championships.”
