Antonio Giovinazzi has returned to Formula One. Unfortunately for the Apulian driver, the news is not a surprise market bomb, but it does represent an intriguing opportunity for the former Alfa Romeo standard bearer. In fact, Haas chose the Italian to drive in two free practice sessions 1 this year, in the Italian and Austin GPs. Giovinazzi’s Formula E adventure came to an end a few weeks ago, as he never managed to get into the points, finishing the year with a depressing zero in the standings. However, there is now an opportunity for # 99 to seize, clearly made possible by the close relationship between Ferrari – to which the boy from Martina Franca is still linked as a third driver – and Haas. The Kannapolis team’s official press release explained how Giovinazzi will alternately take the place of Mick Schumacher and Kevin Magnussen in the two sessions in which he will participate. This is a ‘comeback’ for Kimi Raikkonen’s former teammate, as he had previously ridden with Haas – again during free practice sessions – during the 2017 season.
The opportunity is appealing to Giovinazzi because, for the time being, Mick Schumacher has not been confirmed by Gunther Steiner’s team for 2023. The young German remains the favorite to fill the second seat on the made in USA team next season, but in the event of his eventual departure, Giovinazzi would become the logical favorite to take his place. However, for the time being, the Apulian driver’s role will be to assist the team in developing the car. “We are delighted to welcome Antonio Giovinazzi back to the team for two outings during FP1,” Steiner said. Ferrari wanted to give Antonio some time in a Formula 1 car during a race weekend, and we were more than happy to help. We had a similar situation with Antonio and Ferrari in 2017. The obvious difference between then and now is the experience he has gained from racing in Formula 1 for the previous three seasons, as well as the feedback he will be able to provide us in Italy and America. “I’m looking forward to seeing Antonio again and having him back in the paddock with us.”
“I am very happy to have the opportunity to drive again in the official F1 sessions,” Giovinazzi said. “Along with the simulator guide, it is important to get behind the wheel of a real car, and I can’t wait to put the suit and helmet back on.” It will be an opportunity to become acquainted with the new generation of vehicles. This is the best way to prepare if you are called to be a reserve driver. Driving on challenging and exciting tracks like Monza and COTA adds to the thrill. Thanks to Haas F1 Team and Scuderia Ferrari, he concluded, “I can’t wait to contribute to the team I worked with in 2017.”
