As the 2022 Formula One season began, reigning world champion Max Verstappen had 20 victories to his name, tying him for 16th place on the all-time wins list with two-time world champion Mika Hakkinen. Verstappen, who is coming off a 10-win season, won his seventh race of 2022 in the French Grand Prix, the 22nd race of the season, on Sunday at Circuit Paul Ricard. After starting from pole position, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc appeared to be in command of the race, but he crashed on his own shortly before his first pit stop. Verstappen, who had just completed a pit stop, took the lead and never looked back. With seven victories this season, the 24-year-old Dutchman has 27 career victories, tying him for eighth place on the all-time wins list with three-time world champion Jackie Stewart. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, four-time world champion Alain Prost, three-time world champion Ayrton Senna, two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, and 1992 world champion Nigel Mansell are the only drivers he trails. So far this season, all but one of Verstappen’s seven victories have resulted in him tying someone on the all-time wins list. His victory in Jeddah was his 21st of the season, tying him with 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen. With his 22nd win in Imola, he tied 1996 world champion Damon Hill, and with his 23rd win in Miami, he tied both three-time world champion Nelson Piquet and 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg. He won his 24th race in Barcelona, tying him with five-time world champion Juan Manuel Fangio. In Baku, he tied three-time world champion Niki Lauda and two-time world champion Jim Clark for the most wins in a single season. Prior to tying Stewart for eighth place on the list with his 27th career victory in Le Castellet, he had sole possession of ninth with his 26th win in Montreal. With 10 races remaining on the 2022 schedule, he has a chance to match a few more drivers on the list above him. Mansell has four wins more than him, with 31, and Alonso has one more than Mansell, with 32. Verstappen now has a 63-point lead over Leclerc in the driver standings, the most he has ever had in his Formula One career.
